Modern Context
Black Friday
In a civilized society, violence is never the solution to any problem, but on Black Friday, it becomes tolerable. Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving where major retailers open early and offer promotions. Customers will usually do anything just for cheaper products. The urge to buy more material items at a lower price is enough to cause this uncivilized behavior. Different than 1920's consumerism, the customers want to “save” money when they purchase things on Black Friday. Research shows that an average American household consisting of 3 people spends around $240 on entertainments per month, but on Black Friday, an average of $403.35 is spent. iPhone 7
iPhone has been the most popular mobile device for the past 9 years; almost everyone has it. The trend pressures people to buy each new model, because they are convinced that they need it in order to fit in in today's modern society. Similarly, in the 1920's, many Americans used consumerism as a way to look as if they belonged to the rich upper class, or to fit the appearance of living the American Dream. When the iPhone 7 was introduced, consumers camped outside the store; it was that important for them to have the next best thing, and to have it before anyone else. |
